Why Israeli banknotes fascinate collectors
Few countries have had as dramatic a monetary history as the Land of Israel. In less than a century, the region cycled through Ottoman liras, British Mandate pounds, Israeli pounds, old shekels, and the current new shekel β each currency marking a turning point in the country's story.
A brief history of currency in the Land of Israel
- Pre-1914 β Ottoman lira For four centuries the Ottoman Empire's currency ruled the region's markets. Ottoman coins and notes are rare survivors from the era before the Land of Israel became a global focus.
- 1927β1948 β British Mandate Palestine pounds The Anglo-Palestine Bank issued pounds denominated in both mils and pounds β beautifully designed notes carrying the official Mandate imagery. These are now rare and sought-after.
- 1948β1952 β The Anglo-Palestine Bank transitions In the chaotic first months of statehood, existing Mandate notes were overprinted and reused. These transitional notes are especially scarce.
- 1952β1980 β Israeli pound (lira) The Bank of Israel issued its own lira notes, depicting famous Zionist leaders, Israeli landscapes, and the symbols of the new state. Early lira notes are prime collectibles today.
- 1980β1985 β Old Israeli shekel Runaway inflation forced a revaluation. The short-lived old shekel period produced notes that are now relatively rare.
- 1986βpresent β New Israeli Shekel (NIS) The current currency introduced a complete redesign β but the older issues are what historians and collectors prize most.
"Each banknote was legal tender in the markets of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa β used by real people building a country, day by day."
